Bright and colourful wedding photography at Netherbyres House
When I arrived on a mid-July morning in 2024, ready to photograph the brilliant H & C’s wedding day at Netherbyres House, the brilliant Scottish Borders wedding venue, the rain had already started.
Usually, this would mean my day as a wedding photographer is a little more tricky. As someone who uses lots of natural light and outdoor space in their work, it’s at this point I would usually start to hatch a rainy-day action plan at the venue. However, Netherbyres House lacks no light nor colour, and actually turned out to be a fantastic rainy day venue!
Wedding ceremony at Netherbyres House: Thoughtful interiors, beautiful design
One thing I loved about wedding photography at Netherbyres House was how much natural light there was on hand. Big windows and high ceilings, paired with bright, colourful interiors, created such a fun space to work with. If you’re looking for real wedding inspiration at Netherbyres House, look no further.
H did her bridal prep in the downstairs bedroom with her girls, which was kitted out with a large bed, ample space, velvet chairs and a loud patterned sofa. It oozes fun and style – a perfect backdrop for your wedding photography! Although the rain outside made for a dull day, there was nothing dull about H & C’s day!
From the bright florals from Occasions of Eyemouth, to the colourful decor H & C had set up in the spaces, it all pulled together to reflect just how fun their day was going to be.
Humanist ceremony = joy
I’m honestly such an advocate for humanist celebrants and their ceremonies! Some of my favourite ceremonies I’ve photographed have been led by humanists. A humanist celebrant is a trained professional who creates and conducts non-religious, bespoke ceremonies for major life events, including weddings. They will provide a personalised alternative to religious services, focusing on the individual's life, values, and stories.
H & C were married by the wonderful Pauline Muir of Fuze Ceremonies. Having worked with Pauline a number of times now, I knew it would be special. She takes so much time beforehand to get to know the couple, so that during the ceremony, their true personalities and stories can shine.
Too rainy for outdoor wedding portraits? No problem!
The incessant rain stopped us from exploring the vast grounds at Netherbyres House for their wedding portraits, but it just meant that we got to utilise all of the gorgeous spaces offered inside instead! My approach to photography is documentary-led, and is a little less posed. This means I gave H & C things to do and things to chat about, so they can feel like themselves when they look back at their wedding photos.
Job done, party on
From then on, the party was on! From fun group photos, to hilarious, emotional speeches, right through to the Tartan Entertainment party in the evening, H & C and their guests had the most fun!
