S & S chose to exchange their vows in an iconic Glencoe location – tucked away in the mountains with the vast landscape behind them. Their ceremony, led by humanist celebrant Susan, was a thoughtful and told the story of how they met and fell in love. As they stood surrounded by towering peaks and rolling rain clouds, the landscape changed by the minute. The wind moved through the grass, clouds shifted across the mountains, and for a moment it felt like they had the entire Highlands to themselves.
For legally binding marriages, Scotland requires:
A registered celebrant
Two witnesses
Submission of marriage paperwork in advance
But beyond that, you have complete freedom to make it personal.

After their ceremony, we explored some of the most iconic spots in the Highlands. The mountains of Glencoe hold so much history, which if you’re a wee nerd like me, just adds so much more to the experience. Although it holds a fairly dark history, Glencoe is home to many couples wedding days, as they choose the wonderfully accessible spots that are seeped in stories old and new.
Come rain or shine, Scotland elopements are truly so magical
Rain was no stranger to us this day – which isn’t too unusual in Scotland as I’m sure you’re aware! From short showers during their ceremony, to a full-on downpour at the end of their day, S & S took it in their stride and didn’t let it affect their day as a whole. I always set expectations with elopers that we may face bad weather, but I also say it’s part of the adventure! With spare (waterproof) layers, good shoes and some good backup plan locations, a rainy elopement is wild and beautiful and makes for EPIC photos.
